Local Chapter Wants to Rein-In President

One local president of the NAACP has made the the cardinal
mistake of mpissing off his local membership and may pay the
ultimate price. By turning the presidency to a monarch Wayne
Jearld may soon find himself impeached. Check out the article
below and then feel free to add your two-cents.

Members of the Anne Arundel NAACP chapter are moving to oust their leader, accusing him of ruling autocratically and refusing to work with other community groups and activists.
Many of the area's most prominent civil rights leaders have turned against President Wayne Jearld since he became president of the local chapter in January, including some who supported him and helped him win that office.

In recent weeks, the chapter's executive committee approved a no-confidence vote in him. Members then circulated a petition seeking his resignation. They needed 20 signatures to start the impeachment process and received 44.
Jearld did not respond to calls for comment but said publicly last month that he plans to serve out his two-year term.

The petition has been forwarded to the national office of the NAACP in Baltimore, where officials will review it and decide how to proceed. A spokesman for the national office did not return calls from The Washington Post.

In the past, there have been controversies, such as challenges to the results of leadership elections. But this is the first time in the local chapter's history that its leader has been brought into the impeachment process, according to George Phelps Jr., an executive committee member.

The local chapter, and the national organization as a whole, has struggled in recent years with flagging membership and budget shortfalls.
